Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located at Eding 40 km to the south of Dongfang City Town, Hainan Province. The reference section is located at the Niudi Ridge (Xu Guanghong, 1992). It was named by the Regional Geological Survey Party of Guangdong Province in 1964, and was first cited openly by Sheng Jinzhang in 1965.


Lithology and Thickness

Limestone. A suite of grey and grey-black very thick-bedded to massive carbonates, intercalated with a small amount of clastic rocks. The major rock types are cherty- concretion-bearing micrite, bioclastics-bearing micrite, granular micrite, intraclast biomicrite, micritic granular limestone and dolomitic micritic crinoidal limestone. Thickness is 365 m.

Lower contact

Conformable contact with the underlying Echa Fm

Conformable contact with the overlying Nanlong Fm

Regional extent

Distributed mainly in the areas of Dongfang City and the Changhua River valley of Changjiang County in the western part of Hainan Province.

Fossils

Abundant Fusulinida fossils such as Parafusulina gruperaensis, P. langdaiensis, P. sapperi, Minojapanella elongata, Yangchienia hainanica, Chalaroschwagerina decora, Laxifusulina neimongulensis, Misellina ovalis, etc.
